Reception and Key Stage 1

The final year of the Foundation Stage is often called the 'Reception Year' and this is the year that the children start in the main school.  From this the children move into Key Stage 1, which is Years 1 and 2.

The school currently runs three classes in each year group and there are not currently any mixed aged classes.  This is subject to change and can be altered on an annual basis to meet the needs of the school; for example, if there were falling numbers on roll.

Your child is entitled to start school in the academic year in which they turn 5 years old.  The academic year runs from September 1st to 31st August inclusive.

The school's current admissions policy is operated by the Shropshire Council as the Local Authority (LA) on behalf of the school, full details of which together with information about the arrangements for admission are set out in the "Parents' Guide to Education in Shropshire" copies of which are held in school for the reference of interested parents or alternatively are available from the Admissions Team, Shirehall, Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury SY2 6ND. If your child attends the Early Years Setting, you will be given information in the Autumn Term the year before your child is due to start school.  This explains the admission arrangements and procedures that you will need to follow to apply for a school place for your child.

Those children who are allocated a place at the school for their children to start in Reception are invited to an induction, which will follow the lines of a normal school day.  Parents are invited to a New Entrants' Evening before the school visit where staff discuss the school's aims and routines with parents.

The full policy is available in the policies section.

School Day
The morning session is from 8.50 a.m. to 11:45 or 12:00 (dependent on year group) with a 15 minute break and the afternoon session is from 1:00 p.m. to 2.:50 p.m.

The school doors will be open at 8:35 a.m.

Parents of children in the Reception Classes are invited to bring their children in to school in order to settle them for the start of the school day.  A bell rings at 8:50 a.m. giving a signal for parents to leave the setting and allow the start of the day to commence.  In the summer term children are encouraged to come in to school independently in preparation for KS1.

In Years 1 & 2 children are left at the door, where staff are on duty to ensure that the children are entering the school building safely once they leave your care.  Any messages for your child's teacher can be given at the door and these will be passed on.  Should you require a personal word with your child's teacher then please ask a member of staff on the door and they will try their best to accommodate you.

When your child is in Years 1 & 2, and in the summer term for Reception, you will be invited to come in to school one afternoon a week at 2:40 p.m., this will allow your child to share some of their work with you.  These are very valuable sessions and we very much welcome you to them.
