Blowing Up Balloons

On Science day in  Year 2 children did an investigation to blow up a balloon. In one bottle they added popping candy to the water and the other bottle they added Alka Seltzer. They found out that the Alka Seltzer worked the best.

The children learnt that they were creating a chemical reaction. They learnt that popping candy is exposed to carbon dioxide when the ingredients are heated up before allowing to cool. When they added the popping candy to the water they could hear the carbon dioxide being released in a popping sound.

The children learnt that Alka Seltzer contains sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and citric acid. When we put this into water it created lot of tiny bubbles containing carbon dioxide in.

The children found that the best one was the Alka Seltzer.
