The PE and Sport Premium is additional government funding provided to primary schools to improve the quality of physical education, physical activity and sport. The funding is designed to create lasting improvements that benefit all pupils and help schools build a culture where being active is valued and enjoyed.
The funding aims to support schools in helping children lead healthy, active lives by increasing opportunities for physical activity, developing confidence and participation in sport, and ensuring that every child can experience success, regardless of their background, needs or abilities.
Through the effective use of PE and Sport Premium funding, schools should strive to:
- Support all children to enjoy healthy, active lifestyles.
- Increase participation in physical activity and school sport.
- Remove barriers so that all pupils can access and benefit from sporting opportunities.
- Improve children’s physical health, emotional wellbeing and personal development.
- Foster positive attitudes towards physical activity that can last a lifetime.
- Encourage confidence, resilience, teamwork and enjoyment through sport and movement.
National guidance also highlights the importance of children being physically active every day and recommends that schools provide high-quality PE alongside a broad range of opportunities for pupils to be active, take part in sport and develop healthy habits for the future.
